Partially titanium-substituted potassium niobates, KNbX Ti1-XO3 (x=1, 0.8, 0.6, 0.5), with a perovskite-like structure were developed and synthesized by the citrate method. Partial substitution of the B cation extends light response and enhances photocatalytic activity. The materials were characterized using physicochemical techniques: X-ray Diffraction, UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, and specific surface area analysis. Their photocatalytic performance was evaluated for the degradation of a representative azo dye, methyl orange. For titanium-substituted perovskites, a slight decrease in band-gap values was observed compared to unsubstituted KNbO3 . After 240 min under irradiation, the decolorization efficiency in the methyl orange assays reached values above 65%. The highest photocatalytic performance in methyl orange decolorization was for KNb0.6Ti0.4O3 and was attributed to the decrease in band-gap value, crystal size and crystalline perovskite structure, which would allow developing a simple strategy to synthesize active photocatalytic materials.
