At the outbreak of the First World War, Argentina became the recipient of the largest share of European direct investment. The early arrival of British firms was followed later by German, Belgian, French, Dutch and Italian companies, especially attracted by the expansion of the domestic market and favorable exchange rates. This article analyzes the organizational forms, the investment destinations, and the strategies of European firms in Argentina in the interwar years. It identifies the entry of new firms as well as the shift of the organizational forms and sectoral distribution of the activities developed by European firms. The drivers that pushed European companies to settle down in Argentina are also analyzed considering the current theories of business internationalization. Based on a vast array of primary sources, this study relies on a new quantitative estimate of foreign companies operating in Argentina, to bring a profile of the European multinational companies operating in Argentina in the interwar period, a topic underdeveloped by previous studies.
