Adam Scott and Hugh of Miramar were two men who lived in the middle of the twelfth century and who, in various aspects of their lives, reflected the philosophical and religious aspects of that century. At a time when the humanity of Jesus and of mankind was being discovered in various ways, Adam and Hugo reflect in their writings their humanity in the flesh, suffering the vicissitudes of a life whose goal -Christian perfection-, they are not able to achieve completely. In this paper I propose to analyse the existential evolution of both of them on the basis of their writings, adopting acedia, as it was conceptualised by Evagrius Ponticus and transmitted to Western Christian spirituality, as a key to reading it. Specifically, I am interested in demonstrating how this demon can enter the soul and provoke a kind of distortion of reality that deeply disturbs the spirit and provokes profoundly painful emotions and decisions.
