One of the most important festivals of ancient Egypt celebrated in the city of Abydos during the Middle Kingdom was associated with the god Osiris. Due to this popular celebration, Abydos became a ceremonial funerary center visited by the Egyptians to set up stelae, build up chapels and make offerings to ensure their continuous and eternal participation in the Osirian rites after their death. In this way, the city of Abydos would have been transformed into a sacred place that attracted hundreds of pilgrims every year. This paper aims to investigate the origin of these pilgrimages to Abydos and their ritual significance. Therefore, we will study the transformation process of this place into a ceremonial site and reflect upon the possibility of considering these pilgrimages to Abydos an Egyptian social practice.
