In this paper we present a historical overview of the ways in which Rural Education System was organized in Argentina and Brazil. Then we focus on the process of opening of Alternation Schools in both countries. These historical reconstructions are based on interviews with actors linked to these schools and secondary sources. We argue that the pedagogy of alternation emerges on the one hand in connection with social movements that assumed education as a factor of social transformation and, on the other, in tension with the hegemonic rural education system. Our study highlights the relevance of analyzing the generation of coalitions between diverse actors (Catholic Church, unions, government officials, agricultural cooperatives, social and political movements) in the development of educational practices that incorporate the experiences, culture and demands of rural populations as an integral part of their Educational approach. Finally, although the opening of these schools is linked to a type of «Liberating Education» it is not without tensions in everyday school experience. This oscillates between Training of critical thinking and Workforce training for agricultural work involved in The Green Revolution.
