The Hexaemeron by Ambrose of Milan (4th century) is a treatise that follows in the footsteps of ancient scholars by adopting a dialogical, though entirely rhetorical, style. Furthermore, the text explicates the topics dealt with through common experience, founded on a keen understanding of man and nature, manifested in a vast array of metaphors crafted with skill and careful attention to detail. In chapter 9 of the sixth day sermon on the Creation sequence, the section we deal with in this paper, the references to the human person endeavor to outline the Christian anthropological ideal. The analysis brings to the fore the rhetorical strategies employed to convey a pastoral message in a Christian key that, however, hints at the anthropological and sociological tensions of the ancient world.
