The text Life of John the Almsgiver is studied on the theme of poverty; one pays attention to the evolution of the words ἐλεημοσύνη and ἐντολή and the various types of “poor”, with the ideological motivations of the patriarch. It is concluded that in front of the poverty as eternal reality, the pagan “pity” is made “flesh” in the entrails of the Christian man: the mercy to the needy person must bend over concrete actions. The didactic intention of this tale points to this action; about that, the patriarch is a model of Christian man, subject or leader. The vocabulary and the strong images underline the inner commotion which mobilizes the charitable act.
