In this article we will analyze the significance and use of metaphors in behavioral ecology, an area of great interest in contemporary biology. Particularly, we will assess the presence of certain metaphors and the way some of the main behavioral ecologists use them. One of the central aspects we will tackle refers to the reification of metaphors, that is to say, to the possibility that metaphors might be “forgotten” as such. In this sense, we will try to recognize some of the potential consequences that this process of reification could bring to scientific research. Thus, this article shows that metaphors are not only useful “tools” for scientists to communicate their ideas, but that these also play an important role in the making up and maintenance of (new) ontologies by reification.
