Homelessness is defined as a social relationship, product of complex dynamics of social affiliationdisaffiliation. From a community mental health approach, subjective experiences of suffering are interdependent on the socio-historical-cultural fabric in which they are inscribed. This implies not reducing mental suffering to psychopathological classifications as watertight categories. The relationship between homelessness-mental health is multifaceted and not lineal. This article aim is to present some of the ways in which this relationship is manifested, distinguishing, from a social epidemiological perspective, three main areas that allow us to characterize it: drug uses, systematic and persistent violence, and low perception of social support.
