In federal countries, elections are held for the different levels of government. These elections may be simultaneous or held on different dates. In 2023, most of Argentina’s provinces held gubernatorial and mayoral elections separately from the presidential elections. In the run-up to the 2023 general elections, different electoral tests were held at the subnational level. These subnational elections demonstrated that voters make different electoral choices when voting for provincial and national authorities. This paper examines the subnational dynamics that influenced the Argentine elections of 2023, with a particular focus on the impact of high electoral splitting and provincialisms on the emergence of new political forces. The analysis reveals that the president-elect emerged as the preferred candidate in subnational states with a marked influence of provincialisms, breaking with the traditional pattern of political polarization.
