The 1955 coup in Cordoba is usually explainedfrom the perspective of the strength of the localchurch structure and the weakness of a CatholicPeronist party that imploded with the conflictbetween the Church and Perón. This paperseeks to clarify both conditions: It argues thatthe transformation of Cordoba Catholicism intoan anti-Peronist political actor arose as a meansof preventive resistance to the core expansion ofnational Peronism, since in Cordoba, thePeronist structure, including the local laborunion, showed signs of being compatible withthe universe of Catholic values. This situation, coupled with the interventionist dynamicapplied from Buenos Aires to local Peronistapparatuses, prevented the formation of a stable, autonomous leadership which resulted in theinability to react and the half-heartedness ofMediterranean Peronism at decisive moments of the conflict.
