Moral Tribes, by Joshua Greene (2013), proposes two complementary tasks: on the one hand, to discredit classical philosophical arguments in the moral and political sphere (eg, from Kant or Rawls); on the other hand, to offer constructive arguments from a utilitarianism, articulated as a deep pragmatism, which allows us to account for the conflicts of the Us-Them link and, in turn, advocate solutions in terms of an overcoming ‘metamoral’. In this work we will dwell on a difficulty of his proposal: the inadequate distinction between the moral and the political when characterizing the problems-examples proposed. We will argue that a concept of ‘metapolitics’, in complementarity with the concept of ‘metamoral’, would make it possible to resolve this difficulty more effectively.
