This paper represents a theoretical and bibliographical review of the memory approach applied to the analysis of representations of the past in indigenous communities. To do so, we review epistemological assumptions of memory paradigms in order to reflect on the “present pasts” of these communities. We conclude that many categorisations, constructed from the experiences of subjects with other histories, beyond their reification and abstraction, limit the analysis of indigenous memories in general. We also consider that, in the case of Santiago del Estero, given its particular formation of provincial alterities, it is crucial to resist the idea of ethnifying indigenous memories and to board them, in first approximations, as a political practice and as a generator of groupness.
