Currently, there are numerous debates that warn about the punitivist features associated with the functioning of the state. Our interest in the notion of the police state stems from the fact that it is a political category widely used to denounce practices of institutional violence, mass incarceration and detention directed at disadvantaged sectors, and we seek in this article to contribute to the current theoretical debate on this problem in Latin America. This study traces the conceptual elaboration of the notion of the police state in regional studies, particularly in research from the last decade. To this end, a systematic review of the scientific literature published between 2010 and 2019 was carried out. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria to this search, twelve articles were found that addressed the notion of the 'police state'. By analysing the topics raised in these studies, it was possible to recognise common elements and processes characterised under the notion of the police state in different countries in the region. Consequently, the expansion of these state (re)configurations is presented as a relevant social and political problem in recent years, which must now be reviewed and deepened based on the contributions of the social sciences.
