This article aims to describe the teaching profession in contexts of urban poverty, but also related to the contemporary societal focus on professional performance. The hypothesis is that teachers’ practices produce contradictory and tense sensations. The results show that teachers have ways of speaking and senses which express exhaustion, anguish and loneliness in daily experiences inside and outside the classroom. However they also show hopes for improving school and schooling. This burden appears as part of their burnout and as a key factor for thinking about the possibilities of education today. The research was done mostly using exploratory and qualitative research methods. It used in-depth interviews conducted since 2017 with teachers who work in secondary schools in San Martín district (Buenos Aires) in contexts of urban poverty. Some of the questions and central matters covered by these dialogues refer to the meanings they assign to school and schooling, to their own actions and work at school, to their relationship with students, and to their desires, expectations and hopes in contexts where inequalities are deepening.
