Abstract

This paper presents initial approaches to the analysis of a series of pieces created by detaineesdisappeared during the last Argentine military dictatorship (1976–1983), made from garments to which they had access in captivity. These transformations of clothing reveal productions that combine the singular material conditions of their making with the exercise of specific technical knowledge. The material outcome of these skills enacted through remnants of clothing reveals a creativity that generated resistance, motherhood, and memory. The analysis of the corpus under study is carried out from a perspective on aesthetic objects as endowed with agential capacity, along with the notion of trace from actor-network theory: in this work, clothing is not conceived as a mere remainder that symbolizes meanings prior to its existence, but rather as a mark, a mediation that makes things happen. The cases analyzed are part of a series of productions created during detention that managed to exist beyond its confines, and their selection was determined by a feature that distinguishes them from other similar works: they are pieces that create and preserve the maternal bond that abduction sought to break. It is this trajectory that the paper sets out to trace.
