A Estrutura Produtiva Agropecuária na Região de Araçatuba, Estado de São Paulo, e suas Implicações

Abstract

In coexistence with the hegemonic occupations represented by sugarcane and beef cattle, other food crops in western São Paulo developed productively for the priority supply of local, regional and national domestic market. Arranged in different technification, organizational and capitalization levels, these agricultural activities are present in the horizontality of the used territory in spatial circuits of supplementary and subaltern hegemony. Characteristically, most of the fresh food consumed in regional markets comes from distant sources. Because of the territorial divisions of the production of different food cultures in the geographic space and the accumulation of the producers ‘technical-organizational knowledge in the agricultural regions, each food has, predominantly, concentrated circuits originating in spots and stains of the territory, given the specialization of production in the capitalist market. However, in the maintenance of rudimentary techniques, autochthonous rationalities survive and reproduce themselves (in the interstices of new modernities), which persist in offering traditional products of western São Paulo’s culture. The objective of this research was to demonstrate the food supply from agriculture produced in the Araçatuba region and to discuss some implications for the diet of the autochthonous population, in relation to food access and consumption. It was found that that a production primarily directed at a distant market does not provide the conditions for an affordable supply of food for a regional population.
