Te goal of this paper is to present an analysis of the cases of word ends in the fourth trochee of the dactylic hexameter in the Iliad and the Odyssey, that is, of verses in apparent transgression of Hermann’s law or bridge. Te author observes, frstly, the notable divergences in scholarship regarding the amount of this type of cases in Homer and then presents an original count that tries to solve the question in the most defnitive way possible. Te author does not present the verses indiscriminately, but classifes ‘transgressions’ into four types: ‘pseudo-violations’, ‘doubtful pseudo-violations’, ‘partial violations’ and ‘real violations’. He presents two tables for the frst group, showing the monosyllables that the poet places in the locations in question; for the other three groups, all compiled cases are listed. Te conclusions summarize the exact quantities observed and make some comments on the diferences between the two poems. Finally, an appendix presents the complete list of verses with transgressions of Hermann’s.
