This article derives from a socio-anthropological research (2014-2020) whose general objective was to analyze the school experiences of young people living in context of urbano poverty. The empirical information comes from observations, workshops, informal conversations and interviews, which we carried out in a high school in the city of Rosario (Santa Fe, Argentina). Based on the advances in the analysis process, we present a description of stigmatizing meanings that circulate about the school and the population that attends it, meanings that are appropriate by the students, who characterized it as “escuela de negros”, “escuela de rochos (thiefs)”, negatively and disparagingly loading these terms. We ask, how do young people experience the fact that they are going to a stigmatized school and that, therefore, they may be objet or stigmatization? Thus, we were able to identify that young people build symbolic distances in relation to various “others” as a strategy to distance themselves from stigmatization.
