The underpotential deposition (UPD) of Cd was studied in the system Au(111)/Cd2+, SO42- by conventional electrochemical techniques and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The Cd UPD process is initiated at E < 0 mV, with the formation of islands of a (1x1) atomic structure on the Au(111) substrate. These islands grow and coalesce following a layer by layer mechanism. At a constant potential, the charge related with the Cd deposition increases with the polarization time due to the formation of a Au-Cd surface alloy. An interdiffusion process takes place between Au and Cd atoms, which provides new sites for the Cd adsorption and thus facilitating the continuous alloy formation. Therefore, the Cd amount deposited at underpotentials is not limited to one monolayer. Depending on the potential and the polarization time a phase transition occurs, suggesting the formation of different phases of the Au-Cd alloy.
