The bishop’s figure is addressed from different perspectives in its multifaceted intersections with the monastic world. The recent historiographical contributions tend to praise the functions of the episcopus from a dynamic perspective, built upon the peculiarities of their local settings and framed within the broader historical processes developed in the Middle Ages. In this line of work, this book aims to pursue the study of the relationships between bishops and monasteries, exploring three main thematic axes: the bishops’ individual trajectories, linked to the monastic world in diverse ways, their role in the ecclesiastical organization and the control of local churches, and the patrimonial dynamics that connected bishops and monasteries.
