Many surveys have focused in quantifying theatre audience and measuring its affiliation, but it has been scarcely analyzed the meanings and experiences that audiences arise in theatre artists. Instead of considering audiences as a mere presence that permit spectacles to be held, I will show that the public is a living agent that provokes specific effects in the world of theatre. Particularly, this article analyzes how audiences contribute to build experiences in the professional and subjective trajectory in theatre artists. To that end, I will use the scopes of social phenomenology and symbolic interactionism, since I will understand the audiences as a signifying other for the artists, who create, at the same time, labels to classify and give them meaning. This paper explains how audiences shape artist’s subjectivity as professionals, enhance emotions on the stage and become part of diagnosis on why one city is or is not convenient to professional development. In consequence, I will show that perceptions of the audiences are built according to contrasts between territories, in this case, Buenos Aires and Tucumán, two cities which would host different kinds of audiences.
