This article presents how the notions of language, people, community and culture are articulated in the works of Bartomeu Melià, Augusto Roa Bastos, and –concerning them– those of Ticio Escobar; and how they propose alternative programs, different from their crystallized uses in Paraguay, to name and characterize the popular culture and, secondly, to think about national culture according to an ambitious paradigm which does not integrate the notion of popular just as a subordinate object. The starting point for these inquiries is the Guarani language, as the main objectification of the popular culture that even intervenes in the construction of the national imaginary. Then, the reflections address different levels of symbolic production (literary and artistic), in which the subaltern stands as a subject and producer of culture and not simply an object of external interpretation.
