As the popularity of women’s football in Argentina increases, it is becoming a disputed field, where various actors struggle to establish the meanings of this sport. Actors who promote a type of football that sustains hegemonic femininity coexist with those who propose a feminist football that questions traditionally assigned gender roles. Based on the analysis of journalistic sources, online publications, and ethnographic experiences carried out in the City of Buenos Aires, this article investigates how these disputes are carried out based on the following questions: what gender meanings circulate in women’s football? How do footballers negotiate with dominant discourse about femininity and sport? How are the feminist movement’s discussions expressed in women’s football? Can women’s football be feminist?
