In the ‘Cuyo’ region (between 28°S-36°S and 65°W-70°W) the grape production is the main raw material source for the agro-industry, becoming the most developed region for wine production in Argentina. The analysis focuses on the annual grapevine yield in Mendoza Province in the period 1979-2008. The annual vintage occurs at the end of February till mid-April. The main climate factors affecting grapevine yields are temperature and precipitation. The temperature can impact the early growth of grape buds. Winter (June and July), late spring (November) and early summer (December) mean maximum temperatures appear to influence the following year´s grape yields. Thus, warmer (colder) months are related with increased (decreased) grapevine yield. In turn, the precipitation negatively impacts the yields by means of both water excess and the impact of the vineyards destruction by hail. Wetter months as November and partially December yield lower grape production. The convective hail storms, affecting the vineyards in January and March of the previous summer as well as in December, show lower grapevine values during the following vintage. Taking into account all climatic variables it is possible to quantitatively estimate, a few months in advance, with an explained variance close to 50%, the grapevine yield in a season.
