New associations of Leptus lomani (Acari: Prostigmata) with Coleopterans in Northeastern Patagonia

Abstract

The present study reports for the first time the association between larvae of the mite Leptus lomani Oudemans and five beetle species belonging to two of the most abundant and ecologically relevant families in Northeastern Patagonia: Curculionidae and Tenebrionidae. This finding represents the first record of a Leptus Latreille species parasitizing beetles of the family Curculionidae in the Americas, and the second record in Tenebrionidae. Additionally, this is the first record of L. lomani associated with Coleoptera, thus expanding its known host range. Since L. lomani can transmit bacteria to its hosts, the ecological and conservation implications of the present finding are also discussed.Este estudio informa por primera vez sobre la asociación entre larvas del ácaro Leptus lomani Oudemans y cinco especies de coleópteros de dos de las familias más abundantes y ecológicamente relevantes del noreste de la Patagonia: Curculionidae y Tenebrionidae. Este hallazgo representa el primer registro de una especie de Leptus Latreille parasitando a escarabajos de la familia Curculionidae en América, y el segundo registro para Tenebrionidae. Además, es el primer registro de L. lomani asociado con Coleoptera, lo que amplía su gama de hospedadores conocidos. Dado que L. lomani puede transmitir bacterias a sus hospedadores, también se discuten las implicancias ecológicas y de conservación del presente hallazgo.
