This paper focuses on the contests about the legal concept of person and argues: 1) that the adjectivation of person is more important than the concept of person itself in determining the semantics of “person”; 2) that this can be understood through the theoretical category of syntagmatic relations proposed by Saussure and 3) that, regardless of the plurality of adjectivations, two senses of person coexist: a classificatory one (which distributes entities into categories) and a qualifying one (which aims to highlight that there is a situated substance). In order to carry out this analysis, the idea of adjectivation and the syntagmatic axis as theoretical categories is explained, different uses that authors have made are presented and allow us to observe that, in general, the question has focused on the legal ontology of the person, even when they propose adjectivations. Finally, the two perspectives of adjectivations proposed here are addressed: the classificatory and the qualifying in order to show how adjectives are used in practice and why it is proposed here that there is a coexistence of ontological positions.
