The objective of this article is to analyze the process of touristification occurring in Chapadmalal in relation to the characteristics of the rural areas present in the southeastern region of the province of Buenos Aires. To this end, quantitative techniques are applied based on the use of official statistics and geographic information systems at the regional level, and interviews, direct observation, and documentary analysis at the local level. For the region, the results reveal sociodemographic changes such as a decline in the rural population (both total and those residing on farms), a reduction in the number of hectares dedicated to primary production, and a heterogeneity in the number of hotel and non-hotel spaces, along with other indicators that make up a rurality index. These kinds of changes are evident in Chapadmalal, combined with a post-pandemic tourism boom that has exacerbated disputes and tensions. Towards the conclusion, methodological convergence and the interplay of analytical scales are highlighted as keys to understanding the complexity of the territory.
