The construction of roads and highways generates road slopes, which may be affected by erosion processes that compromise their stability. One way to restore them is to promote their natural revegetation by the use of ecological restoration techniques. The germinable soil seed bank from a road slope (TL) and their corresponding reference area (AR) in steppe grasslands was evaluated. The study was conducted on national route N°23 (Río Negro). Ten soil samples from TL and AR were collected, which were stratified for 3 months, and placed in a greenhouse to germinate under watering. The seedlings were identified, counted and classified in functional groups (annual/biannual herbs and grasses, perennial herbs and grasses and shrubs). Seed bank of the TL was composed by 16 species (5 natives, 9 exotics, 2 unknown), whereas in the AR 7 species (4 natives, 3 exotics) were found. Regarding to functional groups, 56.3% of the species were annual/biannual herbs and grasses in TL and 42.8% of the species were annual/biannual herbs in the AR. The exotic herbs Rumex acetosella (811±341 seed/m2 ), Verbascum thapsus (811±643) and the native Heliotropium paronychioides (264±121) were the most abundant species in the TL and R. acetosella (705±553) in the AR. It is concluded that it is important to study the seed bank composition of degraded sites in order to identify a seed pool of native species that can initiate revegetation in these sites; and of reference areas to evaluate the feasibility bank transfer as a revegetation technique.
