Faced with a stressful situation, people display different coping strategies. Coping manifests as cognitive or behavioral efforts to reduce psychological stress. Coping strategies can be classified into responses of approach and avoidance, depending on the orientation. Burglary situations are traumatic events that promote the expression of avoidance-oriented coping responses, which can generate symptoms of post-traumatic stress. In this work, coping strategies in burglary victims were analyzed in order to show whether they depend on the development context (burglary on public roads or in the private sphere) and to analyze if there are any differences according to gender. Adults between 18 and 55 years old were assessed using the Moos Adult Coping Response Inventory. No differences were found according to the development context. Significant differences were observed according to gender. While approximation responses of logical analysis and avoidance responses of acceptance-resignation predominate in the male gender, the female gender is characterized by approximation responses based on the search for support. The predominance of this strategy is what could make the female gender more receptive to psychotherapeutic treatments and favor recovery from post-traumatic stress. Only in males, a prevalence of avoidance coping strategies was found. The analysis of the coping responses in burglary victims can provide value for the study of possible therapeutic interventions.
