This article describes and analyses different moments of a public policy oriented to delimit and produce knowledge about land and territories occupied by communities and indigenous peoples from the country, since ethnographic materials from field work realized in the northwest of Salta, Argentina. It explores diverse routine state practices deployed during the indigenous land mapping policy, which became materialized in laws, decisions about how to survey lands, mapping and census results, etc. Being the most important contribution of the research the empiric evidence offered that calls into question the idea of fragmentary practices and disaggregated state, showing bureaucratic practices and state effects that tend to be homogenous, especially in the conceptualization of the indigenous “other” and in the spatialization to the community, settling, ordering him to the community space. The interest of focusing in this experience of state mapping of indigenous lands is related to the possibility of thinking what is this telling us about the state’s relation with indigenous peoples.
