Research on the prevalence of the self perception of loneliness and isolation in adolescents from Santiago del Estero, Argentina was carried out. 337 adolescents between 10 and 16 years old attending private and public schools in Santiago del Estero participated in the present comparative and descriptive transversal study. The objectives were: a) to describe the perception of loneliness and isolation in these adolescents and b) to compare the perception of loneliness according to the socioeconomic level and genre variables. The loneliness and isolation scale (CAS) by Casullo and a sociodemographic survey were administered. Results: even though most high and low socioeconomic level participants showed no deficits in their social behavior, 23% of them perceived themselves as lonely and 20% as isolated. Significant statistical differences in the isolation dimension were found in adolescents with low SEL. Hypotheses on the relation between the findings and the socioeconomic context were formulated. As loneliness is a risk factor which is related to morbidity and mortality, the data presented is particularly useful to design intervention programs to restore inadequate social networks of social support to adolescents and to promote social inclusion.
