The aim of this article is to examine the debates among Argentine civilian and military specialists regarding transformations in warfare in the 21st century. To this end, it seeks to explore the meanings and uses of war in relation to the main categories that shape positions on national defense policy in the country, such as security, defense, threats, aggressions, risks, and conflicts, among others. This analysis allows us to consider whether it is possible to construct genuinely comprehensive analytical categories capable of interpreting, in a broader and more diverse manner, the universe of categories, actors, and meanings related to war. The proposal is to engage in dialogue with the history of fundamental political concepts, as this framework provides a better understanding of conceptual transformations—in this case, those concerning war. More generally, this article reflects on the epistemological problem of understanding an object of study of which we are simultaneously both object and subject of knowledge.
