This paper considers the work of Father Guilermo Furlong S.J. from the point of view of history of science in Argentina. We begin focusing on the years Furlong spent in the USA as a Jesuit student and speculate upon the influence that this education could have had on Furlong’s style of scholarship. Afterwards, we analyze the place of history of science within Furlong’s overall intellectual production and compare his points of view with those of historiography of science in Argentina in the 1940s and 1950s embodied in the mathematician José Babini. The paper underlines Furlong’s role as the founder of the field of studies of colonial science in the Río de la Plata.
