Resumen
In this article, we present an overview of the cellular detoxification processes utilized by fish to eliminate harmful metabolic byproducts and foreign substances known as xenobiotic compounds. The main emphasis is placed on the gastrointestinal system of fish, where we delve into the roles of enterocyte proteins responsible for absorbing, transforming, and excreting toxic compounds. Additionally, this piece consolidates the existing knowledge on how fish intestines employ detoxification mechanisms to combat prevalent aquatic pollutants such as cyanotoxins, pesticides, inorganic compounds, and hydrocarbons.
