In the article we propose to analyze, from a historical-critical perspective, the contradictions, tensions and paradoxes of Youth and Adult Education, and their relationship with inequality. To do this, we take as a starting point a fact of reality, the story of Carlos, a man of forty-five years who approached to the “Itinerant School” built by CTERA, to ask to be taught to read and write. Form his particular case, and with the theoretical tools that we have been building in our research work within the field of Youth and Adult Education, we immerse ourselves in the understanding of the relationships that shaped the Youth and Adult Education. The thesis that we sustain throughout the writing, which emerges from the advances in the production of new knowledge that we are developing in this scarcely researched area, is that the subsystem of Youth and Adult Education is it constituted historically as the articulation of unequal social, economic, political, cultural and educational relations. In this sense, we affirm that it was configured as the corollary of class privileges in education. The article is divided into four sections. In the first, we describe the starting point of the article, which is the story of Carlos, and in the three subsequent sections, we analyze from Carlos’ sentences, the historical relationships that configure the Youth and Adult Education.
