Talc nanoparticles were incorporated to enhance mechanical performance and barrier properties of thermoplastic starch (TPS) based materials in order to obtain adequate films for food packaging. TPS films with talc (0, 1, 3 and 5 % w/w) were obtained by thermocompression. Talc incorporation increased TPS thermal stability as well as modified films opacity and color, without affecting their UV absorption capacity. Water vapor and oxygen permeability were reduced due to particles disposition within the matrix. Bionanocomposites presented higher resilience, toughness and elastic modulus than TPS films, although elongation at break was not affected. Keywords: Thermoplastic starch, talc nanoparticles, thermocompression, oxygen and water vapor permeability, mechanical properties.
