The hunting and consumption of armadillos (Dasypodidae and Chlamyphoridae) is a practice that has been developed traditionally in the eastern plains of Colombia by both indigenous people and local communities. The five species of armadillos that inhabit the eastern plains are consumed. At present, commercial hunting is considered a threat to wild populations, so this problem has been addressed in the program of “Conservation and management program for the armadillos of the Llanos of Colombia” through research and environmental education with local communities and territorial entities of the departments of Meta, Casanare, Arauca, and Vichada. In the process, 479 persons were interviewed, of which 93% claim to have consumed armadillo meat at least once in their life. The creation of two regional conservation strategies is highlighted: “Restaurants free of wild meat” and “Friends of the armadillos farms” has been achieved with 45 restaurants and 48 farms respectively, to reduce illegal traffic and hunting. These strategies have made it possible to mitigate the problem to a certain extent; however, additional efforts are required in hard-to-reach areas of the eastern plains.
