Lefort states towards the end of his analysis of The Prince in Le travail de l’œuvre Machiavel that Machiavelli "outlines a new ontology". The first intention of the present text will be to interrogate this notion, trying to highlight its relevance for Lefort's reading of Machiavelli, and for the development of the lefortian understanding of modern politics. The second will be to try to answer the question about the lack of explicit thematization of this clearly relevant issue. We will suggest that, according to Lefort, the development and elaboration of this notion can only be approached indirectly, and that the privileged surface on which Lefort does this work is the image of power as it is presented in Machiavelli's work; that is, in the figure of the prince in the homonymous book, and in the image of republican Rome in the Discourses.
