This paper makes a balance of the historiography that has analyzed the southern frontier of the Spanish Monarchy in Buenos Aires. In particular, the issue of defending the boundaries with independent indigenous societies during the 18th century, within the framework of studies that have analyzed the period with secular and multy-century perspectives. To do this, a chronological process is followed during the 20th century, from pioneering work in the 1930s and 1940s to the most recent works. The main problems and hypotheses are identified, along with their continuities, disruptions and discussions over the decades, as well as the different approaches in relation to more general historiographical issues.
