At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the Hualfín Valley (Belén, Catamarca) was the destination of numerous archaeological explorations dedicated to extracting and purchasing objects to make up collections. A century later, archaeological investigations in the region have different methods and purposes. Despite these changes, a negative image of the archaeologist is still recorded, associated with looting objects of economic value. In this sense, it is fundamental to address the problem of how that image was historically built and how that history affects the communitys notions about archaeological practices in the present. As a first approach to the problem, this paper analyzes the archaeological practices in La Ciénaga (Belén, Catamarca) carried out at the beginning of the 20th century, based on a report by Carlos Bruch and the manuscripts and photographs of the Muniz Barreto s expedi-tions. Thus, we explore the relationships between the explorers and the community and their influence on construction of collective memories generated around archaeological practices. Finally, the relevance of the analysis results as a basis for constructing of a new relationship between the community, archaeological activity, and heritage is discussed.
