The creation of new national universities between 2009 and 2011 - most of them located in the suburbs of Buenos Aires - together with free and unrestricted admission represent a democratization process of the public system of higher education in Argentina. However, these institutions do not escape the problem of enrolment reduction or the high dropout rates that have affected this education level for decades. Conversely, this situation has been more pressing due to the social and economic vulnerability of the student population. Using a qualitative approach, from the perspective of the university experience and the voice of the students of one of these universities (the Arturo Jauretche National University, UNAJ), this article will focus on the ways in which the forms of socialization and sociability within that university are configured. In conclusion, peer and professor socialization prevent dropouts and make the continuance in the system viable. At the same time, the results obtained in this article allow us to attend the challenges of institutional affiliation mechanisms that hinder the developing of the student‟s autonomy.
