Humic substances are important components of natural waters, they are acidic polymers, predominantly aromatic, which are not harmful to living beings. However, their role in the environment is important because they affect the bioavailability and toxicity of many compounds in the aquatic environment. On the other hand, among the pollutants of aquatic systems are polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some of which are carcinogenic. This series of compounds in general is present in the environment as complex mixtures, presenting a very varied range of chemical, physical and toxicological properties. In the present work, the interaction of humic substances with phenanthrene and anthracene, separated or in mixture, was studied, determining the partition coefficients (Koc) of the substances between the dissolved organic carbon and the liquid phase by a simple methodology that uses extraction in solid phase and determination by UV-visible spectrophotometry. The Koc values obtained are comparable with those reported for these compounds by applying other techniques. The method described is a tool that can be useful to analyze the interaction of hydrophobic organic pollutants with humic substances.
