The “Balance of Payments constraint” has been a persistent issue in Argentina since the very beginning of its industrialization process. During the second phase of import substitution - between the late 1950s and mid 1970s – Argentina’s economy showed short-term cycles known as “stop and go”. This paper aims to analyze the differences and similarities between the typical crises in the balance of payments that occurred during the substitution phase and the problems that emerged in the external sector during postconvertibility (2002-2015). For this purpose were considered the most important variables of the balance of payments in both stages.
