The essay proposes a review of sociological and anthropological reference works on rumor and gossip arguing its feasible articulation with the practices of secrecy and the production of the plausible. Critical reading is ordered based on two positive and interrelated dimensions that convey these phenomena: the construction of social boundaries and personal reputations and the demarcation of cleavages of power. Linked to this, and as a tentative hypothesis, the essay proposes to articulate the production of rumors / gossip and secretisms as opposing and complementary forms of moral imagination. For them, the central consideration is the way in which these phenomena form languages of social intimacy embedded in local grammars of power and collective epistemologies about what is credible.
