Based on an extensive bibliographical review, this article aims to elaborate a genealogy of the development, consolidation and mutation experienced by informational capitalism, from its origins to the present day. Following the analytical proposal of Castells, who differentiates the concept of 'mode of production' from 'mode of development', it is considered that, since the 1970s, the informationalism displaced the industrialism as a mode of development, giving rise to a new stage within capitalism in which the factors that determine the levels of productivity and have a decisive impact on the valorization of capital are digital information and knowledge. Since its emergence, different stages can be recognized, with the year 2008 being a watershed. From that moment, there was a maturation and convergence of 4.0 technologies, mainly Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Big Data, Cloud Computing, among others, which contributed to deepening pre-existing logics and introduce new challenges for social life. This paper seeks to problematize the 'foundational' tendency that usually surrounds the interpretations about the future of a strongly dynamic and changing period such as the current one.
