This article analyzes the construction and modernization of four Argentinean ports by French companies during the first three decades of the 20th century. It shows how certain factors (geographical, political, industrial) determined the choices of modernization and of management of the Argentinean port shores in the framework of economic contracts between a sovereign state and private port construction companies. This modernization of the shores responds to a government policy of hinterland development that favours cereal production in the Pampa for export to Europe. The article also presents a technical genealogy of Argentinean ports based on archetypes built before in Europe or Africa.
