Medical Entomology is the science and technical discipline dealing with studies on the problems that insects (and ticks) produce on people’s health, particularly as vectors of human pathogens. The discipline has a central role in studies aiming at the understanding on the relationships within the triad insect-pathogen-human and in the design and execution of programs for the vigilance and control of insect vector populations affecting the public health. The increasing impact of vector transmitted diseases (emergent, re-emergent and the ones that never disappeared) contrasts with the increasing shortage in medical entomology specialists with the capacity to lay bridges between the scientific community and the public health systems.
