This article examines the particular characteristics of the municipality of San José according to its status as an agricultural colony. At the same time, it considers the demographic and productive changes observed in this jurisdiction during the 1860s. In addition, it analyses the existing tensions between the settlers and certain ranchers in the area. Through records such as correspondence files emanated from the municipality to the provincial government, different types of statistics and regulations, and requests of the settlers; it intends to show that –in that context– the municipality positioned itself as an area of local mediation, acting in a corporate and collegiate manner. It was through this institution that the settlers developed a common space by which they tried to compensate their problems.
