This article aims at an intervention in the Marxist discussion over the nexus between the automatism of economic relations and the emergence of a political subjectivity with the capacity to revolutionise this alienated form of reproduction of human life. To do so, it traces the terms and evolution of the classical debate over the “breakdown” of capitalism and examines Robert Kurz´s recent critical review of the said controversy. Building on the critique of Kurz´s approach, we develop an alternative reading of the Marxian critique of political economy which throws into relief the subsumption of revolutionary subjectivity under the capital accumulation process and which, in addition, brings to view its condition as a mode of existence of productive subjectivity.
